The Old Laurentian U13s is predominantly made up of school Year 8 children, We play full-contact rugby under the Warwickshire RFU Pilot scheme and full continuum laws.
If your child is interested in joining us, please just turn up to one of our training sessions on a Sunday morning. Our sessions usually run from 10.30 - 12.00, with hot dogs and drinks served in the clubhouse afterwards. If you haven't been before, please contact email@example.com for further information.
About the Under 13s
Our primary coaching ethos is to train the children to play as a team. We stress the importance of each child doing their part within the team and will encourage them to make decisions on the pitch, right or wrong. The coaches feel that the enjoyment of playing rugby comes not from winning, but from taking part, playing as hard as you can to the best of your ability, and playing as a team. If all these other things are done, the winning will come.
All our coaches have a strong commitment to player development. As rugby is a late-developing sport we don’t pigeonhole a player into a particular position but challenge them to develop the basic skills they will require as rugby players and also the specific skills they will need playing a particular position.
The coaches encourage players to experiment on the pitch and take risks as players. As long as they feel they’ve made the right decision they will never be criticized, but if a move doesn’t come off they’ll be asked to reflect on what didn’t work and how they could have done it differently.
All our coaches are RFU qualified and nearly half still actively play for the senior club.
The U13s train twice a week on Thursday evenings on a floodlit pitch and Sunday mornings. Thursday evening training is generally to work on fitness, while Sunday mornings are devoted more to skills training, technique and specific training. We generally try to have a match at the end of training every Sunday morning session if there is no match scheduled for the day.
Please ensure that your child is adequately clothed as they can always take layers off if they get too warm. Gumshields are mandatory to take part in any training that involves contact, and the wearing of scrumcaps is encouraged. No hoodies will be allowed for contact training as they can be dangerous if the child is tackled by the neck. Make sure they have a drink that they bring out with them and where possible some fruit to eat as well.
Any aspect of training or match play can be discussed with either the coaches or coordinators.
