Spring has arrived and the mixture of good weather plus the chance to play on the first team pitch, brought a good crowd of parents and a 28 man U13 OLS squad to play this first match against Long Buckby. The recent deluge had subsided and left soft conditions on the pitch which heralded a tough tackling match.
Ian McPherson refereed and brought along his no nonsense approach to any infractions from both sides. This resulted in a good fast game, but saw OLS giving away too many penalties due to careless attention.
OLS early scoring pattern continued in this match with an opening run by Callum in the first two minutes to land the first try. This saw the start of Callum’s highest match score since Claverdon this season (5 tries).
OLS larger pack helped with the frequent scrums resulting from the miss-handling. It was from this dangerous position on the OLs 22 that a break by Blake at number 8 led to some fast play through the backs to see Jack land his first try this season on the wing a few minutes later.
Long Buckby played a good defence against OLS frequent attacks. They certainly were not giving up at any point and came back with some hard runs. To their credit they put three tries and a conversion against an OLS team unused to this kind of continued onslaught.
The score at half time (33-12) left little doubt of the final result, as OLS wingers including Conlon’s full pitch run to score a try under the posts showed OLS running the ball at speed when they used the line properly.
A great mornings Rugby was played by two good teams and parents and players should be proud of the sportsmanship displayed.
