A great day out for OLS under 13’s playing away at Kenilworth. The weather tossed the full mixed bag assortment, that has made this, (for the occupants of the U.K) their eternal conversation piece. From wrapped up cold to sunburnt heads, the day heralded the same assortment on the rugby field.

With a squad of just under 30, OLS fielded two teams in this tournament playing against home side Kenilworth and visitors Syston from Ashby-de-la-Zouch, Leicestershire.

The first game of the day saw OLS team 1 face up to the only team to have beaten them all season. This was the game that mattered. The initial nerves and sluggish reactions saw OLS let a number of easy tackles pass through, giving Kenilworth the lead at half time 10- 5. After a short break and tactical discussions, a resurgent and now fully involved OLS team began hammering the tackles home, winning the ball at the rucks to pass to their uncatchable wing. Callum getting his first hat-trick of the day. The whistle blew giving OLS a 15 – 10 win and ensuring their unstoppable momentum for the day.

OLS team 2 took to the field next and played a brilliant game against Syston. An evenly matched squad saw Conlon make the first break and tear up the pitch for his first try of the day with barely an attempt to catch him. This was closely followed by a try for Michael leaving OLS 10 -5 in the lead at half time. Maylon’s second half try interspersed by a riposte from Syston saw a defending OLS waiting for the final whistle to blow, but it didn’t come. A final try by Syston (in the 13th minute) took some of the shine of a well- played match, ending 15 all.

Straight on the bounce, a tired OLS team 2 went on to play Kenilworth. With the disappointment of a drawn match minutes earlier and still breathing heavily in a sun now starting to beat down on the field. The team struggled to find the pace and rhythm required to stall a determined opponent. The resulting 12 tries against OLS2 does not do justice to the effort they put in.

Game 4 saw Syston pitted against a confident OLS team 1. With a win behind them and seeing the opportunity to move the ball out across the backs. OLS game was an evenly spread 25 points each half with both the wingers scoring, Callum getting his second Hat-trick and even a reluctant lock forward (James L) carrying the ball half the pitch to score his first of the tournament.

The quarter final had Syston playing off against OLS team 2. After the previous match, OLS team 2 were going out to make sure the result was definitive this time round. Two early Conlon runs in the first half gave OLS the lead. A hard fought second try in the second by Ben followed by some heavy defence for OLS to end the game 15- 0.

The final game of the day for the trophy, between OLS team 1 and Kenilworth. A depleted Kenilworth team borrowing three players from OLS to get the game going. Early runs by George and Callum gave OLS the platform to rack up a commanding lead, unfortunately a Kenilworth injury further depleting the squad meant the game was forfeited at 15 – 0.

A fantastic day for both OLS squads and a great end to the season, one that can only bode well for the upcoming tour. This season has seen OLS play 14 different matches, 15 different teams and losing only once - to then subsequently beat that team twice. They have amassed over 850 points for and less than 200 against, a blistering result that stands testimony to all the hard work put in by the lads, parents and coaches.

Watch out Barnstable!
