Physical game against tough opposition!
By Gareth Salisbury
Slow start, fast finish!
Old Coventrians brought along two teams to face the three OLs teams and a great mornings rugby was enjoyed by all! Old Coventrians seem to breed them big over their neck of the woods because many of their players towered over some of the OLs group. It has been a frustrating start to the season for us with a couple of cancelled fixtures so we were keen to get started but when the first whistle blew OLs took a while to realise they were actually in a game and let the bigger, more physical OC's players run through them too easily conceding a couple of soft tries. When Alastair, William, Zach and Seb worked out if they used their pace and the full width of the pitch to pass the ball, they could run tries in, the performance in the first game improved drastically.
The slow start theme seemed to be catching and was occurring on every game and generally were taking a few minutes to get started in every game, maybe a little intimidated by the size of their opponents. It was a pleasure to see OLs work out a solution to the problem and actually start playing attractive rugby in most games and see tries spread out across lots of different players in all three of the OLs teams.
One thing to focus on everybody - we need to really try and drill down on our tackling and we will be helping you as coaches over the coming weeks. It is new for everybody and is quite daunting but we did miss a few today! Remember, if you can't bring the player down, lets try and keep hold of them for the 3 seconds or at least until one of your team mates is there to help!
Great efforts from everyone today and special note to William H, Lewis C and Tyler who haven't played lots of games for OLs U9s and equipped themselves really well today!!
Onwards and upwards everybody, see you next week.
